Someone wrote to me this week.
He goes by J.
He is 74 years old.
45 years in architecture
and fire protection engineering.
48 years of marriage
this coming December.
He has survived three battles
with cancer.
And in January 2011...
he and his wife were standing
next to Congresswoman Gabby Giffords
when a shooter opened fire.
Six people were killed that day.
J was one of 13 wounded.
A year later he and his wife stood before
400 chaplains and shared how they got
through what happened.
He barely finished speaking because of the damage
to his vocal cords and lungs.
And this week...
he wrote to me.
Just to say hello.
I read his letter twice.
And I sat with it
for a long time
before I could write back.
Because some people carry things
that most of us will never have to imagine.
And they do it quietly.
Without asking
for anything in return.
J is one of those people.
